The Paradise Papers: A Reading Guide

Harry Truman said it best: “You can’t get rich in politics unless you are a crook”.

One thing we see of DC Swamp politicians, when they leave they are rich.

Expecting politicians to legislate effectively against “offshore tax havens” is like hiring the Hells Angels to reduce meth dealing.

In order to assess the magnitude of a problem, you need to have an accurate measurement of the size of the problem.

I suggest: take a random sample of 50 members of Congress and Senators, and subject them to a Robert Mueller / Independent Counsel level of personal investigation – and see how many stand up to the scrutiny.

We are in the age of leaking. There is no better leaked information than leaked financial information. Gives critical meaning to that old phrase “public accounting”.

    • 李明洙

“We” are not all in the age of leaking. We don’t allow such information to be “leaked” in china. It’s gets exposed through the official and proper channels and the one breaking the rules is publicly humiliated and shamed, and even goes to prison. Does that happen in America? Does that really happen in the UK? You know it doesn’t.

You know this is simply leaked by Clinton allies to hurt the Trump administration and I’m sure the Trump administration will do something similar if they get the chance. I read your comments. You are not happy with the outcome of the election and you clearly don’t think the voters are up to the mental and moral demands of voting and voting well.

      • FriendlyGoat

You may not be in the age of leaking. The entire West is. Will be for the rest of our lives. It is the capability of technology and is never going away. As for hacking of the West from China? You can tell me it doesn’t happen and I’ll tell you a nice bedtime story too, okay?

As for politics, you are correct that I am not happy with the outcome of our last presidential election. We really do have better people to be leading the USA and the free world than Donald Trump.

        • 李明洙

It’s more than the west. It’s anywhere there’s democracy and universal voting rights. Leaking is just used to play games and muddy the waters and cause trouble. It usually doesn’t tell anyone something new. I bet all my money that no American randomly picked will be surprised about politicians being corrupt and offshoring money Etc.

So you think you have the right people, but you don’t have the adequate method to get them to where they need to be. You also are being so critical of the way others voted. Put these two together and you sound a lot more like you’re Chinese and very skeptical of just letting every Joe and Sally vote.

          • FriendlyGoat

And you don’t sound like you’re from China. Just in case you are, please be advised that over half of the people in the United States who voted in 2016 did NOT vote for Donald Trump. In this country, it is possible to lose the national popular vote and still become president depending upon the vote totals in certain states.

          • 李明洙

Why don’t I? Also you surely know that Donald won because you all do it state by state and he won more states, including your area in the central part of the country. Do you know the story of China at all even the last 100 years? Apparently not. We had cities full of the bourgeois class trying to tell everyone else what to do. We didn’t stand for it. That’s how the communist party came to be.

          • FriendlyGoat

You sound like an American right-winger trolling around in a comment section, raising irrelevant issues, not a person from China engaging on the topic of the article or my original comments—-which was “leaking” of documents from any country which can now, it seems, be hacked by many methods from any source. My position on that is that since we ARE in the age of hacking and leaking, since hacking/leaking will be going on for the rest of our lives, there is a growing possibility that ordinary people will become more and more educated about reality by the leaks of formerly-secret financial information.

As for the story of China and the subject of communism, write all you want. Not my topic.

          • 李明洙

How is a person from China supposed to sound? How would you even know what they sound like in general? Do you speak Chinese? Have you been to China? Probably none of the above. It’s a big world out there Mr. Goat farmer. You should explore while you’ve still got time. Aren’t you rather old now?

So ordinary people who can already vote need more information from leaking? you want them to vote without information? Or do you want them to vote with more and more information and that can only be accomplished through the leaking? I honestly don’t think you know just how stupid either proposition sounds to Chinese and so many others outside of your bubble.

I have been flagging your comments for the attention of the owner of this site. They should at least be aware that they have a visitor here carrying on a most-likely-false impersonation with respect to a foreign country which is quite odd in appearance.

          • 李明洙

Oh hello owner of the site! Thanks for hosting. Oh no I’m shaking in my cowboy boots. I’m from China. Of course that doesn’t mean that’s where I physically am today. What do you expect they’ll do about it? You’re really funny person LOL.

          • FriendlyGoat

I have no idea what, if anything, they’ll “do about it”. But they should be aware that some kind of fishing is being attempted in their comment section by persons less than transparent. Bye, bye.

          • 李明洙

You mean phishing lol? You don’t know how to spell the word or what it means. My guess is they’re going to laugh at you for abusing their reporting system and being silly. Hope we hear back soon!

          • FriendlyGoat

No, I meant fishing, and I do know what both mean. I don’t expect to hear anything back. The site owners can laugh off whatever they want.
