    It’s hard to see how a thrown-together “fiscal union” created in haste to meet this challenge can be anything but a disaster waiting to happen. Unless, of course, the EU bureaucracy has such a plan already drawn up, needing only to be brought down off the shelf and put into place. Even in that case, however, Brussels has no way of predicting the fallout from such a move.

    I don’t care what they say. What counts is what they do. This frivolous idea of a United States of Europe was a bridge too far from the beginning. It asked people to ignore too much, to forget even more, and to live in their imaginations rather than the real world. Reality finally came a-callin’.
