Our own Walter Russell Mead and TAI founding board member Eliot Cohen will be testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee at 9:30 AM today on “Global Challenges, U.S. National Security Strategy, and Defense Organization.” The discussion will focus on the long-term security needs of the United States and how best to use the military (and other capacities) to meet them You can watch live if you want to on the Committee website, here, or read Walter’s testimony here (to be published when embargo lifted).
Eliot’s testimony will be forthcoming in his TAI column next week. In Eliot’s most recent column, he wrote that even though the Obama Administration was unlikely to take his advice, nevertheless:
[P]ublic discussion ought to address the nature of American interests in the Middle East, the deeper trends there, and the broad policy instruments available for securing those interests. Those are the first-order questions a new Administration will face in 16 months, and they are worth discussing now.
These hearings are a good place to start discussing those, and many other long-term problems and solution. Watch now.
