Berlusconi's Last Hurrah?

Gaddafi Berlusconi

How the mighty have fallen! Silvio Berlusconi has been kicked out of the Italian parliament, thereby losing his immunity from prosecution for several outstanding charges he’s facing. The BBC:

Ahead of the vote, he vowed to remain in politics to lead his Forza Italia in a “fight for the good of Italy”.

A defiant Berlusconi told supporters gathered outside his Rome residence that “no political leader has suffered a persecution such as I have lived through”.

He said: “It is a bitter day, a day of mourning.”

Berlusconi, 77, said his struggle would continue outside parliament.

He said: “We must stay on the field, we must not despair if the leader of the centre-right is not a senator any more. There are leaders of other parties who are not parliamentarians.”

Is this the last hurrah? Is the longest running show in Italian politics finally coming to an end? With Italy, it’s always hard to tell, and we certainly wouldn’t count il cavaliere out of the game until they carry his coffin out of church. But Silvio Berlusconi would need the skills of Houdini to slither out of his latest predicament.

Who’s that guy he’s with? He looks like a stock tinpot Bad Guy from a ’90s Arnie movie…

That’s because he is: that’s the late and unlamented Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, and his picture is in the dictionary next to the definition of “dictator, tinpot”.
