The US has come to the end of the road in some ways in the Middle East but the US interest in the Middle East and the perceived—in the US—need to act in the Middle East are still there and there is still a significant capacity for the US to act in the region. The interests that still engage and will continue to pull public opinion back towards engagement with the Middle East even when it doesn’t particularly like the idea—there is this question of Jihadi violence. If it were going to stay in the Middle East America would be quite happy to forget all about it. But it doesn’t seem to work that way.
