More wages from Obama’s vaunted Pivot to Asia: According to new satellite imagery, the construction of extensive Chinese facilities in the Spratly Islands—including aircraft hangars, radar systems, and missile defense facilities—is all but complete. The Guardian:
“Beijing can now deploy military assets, including combat aircraft and mobile missile launchers, to the Spratly Islands at any time,” said the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI), part of Washington’s Center for Strategic and International Studies. […]
“China’s three air bases in the Spratlys and another on Woody Island in the Paracels will allow Chinese military aircraft to operate over nearly the entire South China Sea,” AMTI said. “The same is true of China’s radar coverage.”
Earlier this month, the PLA was boasting that China’s dominance in the South China Sea was complete. Today those boasts look a little more credible. Next up could be the deployment of major military assets to the Spratlys, including the kind of jet fighters and missiles already present on Woody Island—and perhaps, even the declaration of an ADIZ over the South China Sea.
