What happens when the supreme leader dies? Is there a clear line of succession?

Remind me of the joke by Douglass Adam in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. This planet was ruled by a cabal of lizard that’s hated by all of their subject, and the lizards are all elected. When our hero puzzled on why they all voted for the lizard, the aliens stated that they cannot afford to have the wrong lizard win the election. The fact of getting someone other than lizard to stand for election is lost on them.

Color me a skeptic. Religious fanatics don’t like to be challenged and I’m betting they keep Rouhani on a very short leash. They want their nuclear program and they’re going to try and get it.

So, are we describing inclusive political institution or in actuality an elite ran extractive political system reinforcing the Supreme leader and mullahs?

I think WRM’s analysis is correct. The deep state will go on as before, but those that have special needs to believe that Iran is now moderate will eagerly cling to any entity they can convince themselves is moderate – like the MB. I think of them as ‘eager clingers’. My inner Tom Friedman is already penning an editorial about ‘the great opportunity the president now has to reach out….’ Well, you know the rest.

The deep state phenomenon extends far beyond Iran. Consider Europe. The real decisions are made by the eurocrat elite and they do not let laws, constitutions, treaties, elections and public opinion stop them. Consider the US. The real decisions are made by bureaucrats and legislating judges. What could be behind the horror they express at the tea party movement? In essence that movement is anti-deep state and poses a threat to America’s ruling elites. So they are slandered, vilified and hounded by the irs and other agents of the bureaucratic deep state.

What distinguishes the Iranian deep state is its ideology and the crudity of its methods.
