Vive La France!
La Marseillaise

In commemoration of those who were murdered yesterday at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, here is Edith Piaf singing La Marseillaise.

The lyrics are pretty fierce. Here’s an English translation, courtesy of Encyclopaedia Britannica, of the first and sixth verse of the original text (the verses that are customarily sung):

“Let us go, children of the fatherland,

Our day of glory has arrived.

Against us the bloody flag of tyranny is raised;

the bloody flag is raised.

Do you hear in the countryside

The roar of those savage soldiers?

They come right into our arms

To cut the throats of our sons, our comrades.

To arms, citizens!

Form your battalions,

Let us march, let us march!

That their impure blood

Should water our fields.

Sacred love of the fatherland,

Guide and support our vengeful arms.

Liberty, beloved liberty,

Fight with your defenders; fight

with your defenders.

Under our flags, so that victory

Will rush to your manly strains;

That your dying enemies

Should see your triumph and glory!

To arms, citizens!

    What follows in no way intended to moderate horrorific and tragic loss of twelve French lives by act of two armed terrorists; the state periodically calls upon its citizens to risk their lives on its behalf. La Marseillaise was composed as a specific spur to identity politics: Nationalism (which found its first major expression in the French Revolution).

    With respect, if you want to provide a true memorial to the victims of this crime, post the cartoons.

    Does this atrocity lead to the rise of Marine Le Pen, leader of the French far-right Front National? There are similar movements in Germany.
    Will these terrorists launch another Crusade in Europe? Time will tell.

      Yes to your first question, I suspect. There is something unfortunately weird about cartoons attracting a violent response from some nuts which then drives voters toward the candidate obtaining loans from Russia.
