Dai Xu, a colonel in the People’s Liberation Army, made a preposterous claim on Weibo yesterday:
The national leadership should not pay too much attention to it [bird flu]. Or else, it’ll be like in 2003 with SARS! At that time, America was fighting in Iraq and feared that China would take advantage of the opportunity to take other actions. This is why they used bio-psychological weapons against China. All of China fell into turmoil and that was exactly what the US wanted. Now, the US is using the same old trick. China should have learned its lesson and should calmly deal with the problem. Only a few will die, but that’s not even a one-thousandth of those who die in car crashes in China.
So just to get that straight, the US used SARS and now bird flu to provoke turmoil in China? If that were true it would mean the CIA (because who else could it be?) is a vastly more impressive spy agency than Via Meadia was aware. After successfully giving Hugo Chavez a deadly dose of cancer, the agency and a nefarious team of “banksters” have moved on to a larger, more difficult target: China, Washington’s biggest rival. Superhuman, super-sneaky agents are even now creeping around China giving bird flu to unsuspecting innocent Chinese civilians.Delusional conspiracy theories like these aren’t believed widely enough to do any real harm to the US-China relationship, at least for the time being. But this should serve as a reminder that there is a smattering of Chinese officials who subscribe to paranoid fantasies. Sometimes, that’s all you need to create a major diplomatic headache.[Chinese woman looks at dead birds in Chengdu, courtesy of Getty Images.]
