European Anti-Semitism Is Alive and Well

Anti-Semitism is continuing its comeback tour of Europe. First it was in France, then in Hungary. Now the Times of Israel reports on anti-Semitism’s appeal in Greek political life:

“Golden Dawn,” a party that that bolsters its grassroots support by demonizing Jewish ghosts: Its high-flying leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos declares: “There were no ovens. This is a lie. I believe that it is a lie…. There were no gas chambers either.”

Winning 5.3 percent of Athens’ municipal vote in 2010 (and as much as 20 percent in some neighborhoods with large immigrant communities), the Golden Dawn Party exploited economic chaos to make a national electoral breakthrough in 2012. It gained 21 parliamentary seats in the May elections and ended with 18 after a follow up vote one month later.

Jew-hating cries are heard across the spectrum, from the centrists to the leftists to the far right. But this scary reality isn’t limited to Greece. As we’ve written before, anti-Semitism is rearing its head in the form of peace-promoting professors in Norway, mayors in Sweden, and vicious attacks in France.

After the atrocities of the Holocaust, the world thought anti-Semitism had finally been put to bed. Now that’s it’s waking up, it’s time for more people to take notice.

In fairness, isn’t it mostly Muslim immigrants who are responsible for the anti-Semiticism we see in France and the other northwest European societies? Not sure it should be lumped together with the home-grown variety we see in Hungary and Greece.

It’s a mix of the old-old antisemitism (racist and chauvinist parties of the far right), the old-new antisemitism (the New Left’s anti-anything western or rational), and the new-new antisemitism (Islamic propaganda and actors in certain countries, especially France). It just shows the protean and conveniently useful nature of antisemitism to a wide spectrum of kooks. A social or civilizational crisis brings such people and ideas to the fore.
