Happy New Year

With the growing Via Meadia team I’d like to wish our readers a healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year.  We’re grateful to all the readers who made 2012 the best year in the history of our young site, and we hope to serve you at least as well in 2013.

Today, January 1, is the last day of our light holiday schedule. Tomorrow we return to our normal schedule of 12 posts on weekdays and 6 on weekends. The Yule Blog will continue to run through January 6, the twelfth day of Christmas.

As the new year unfolds, we will be making some changes. With a bigger staff, we’ll be enhancing our coverage and upgrading the site as we focus on our core mission of helping readers keep up with the news that really matters — while screening out the noise and the fluff.

The new semester at Bard begins later this month and I’ll be teaching a course there on the internet and the public intellectual. As I prepare for this course I’ve been doing a lot of reading and thinking about both the continuities and the changes in journalism and the role of the intellectual going back to the rise of modern political society in 17th century England. In class the students will be learning to write good blog posts (and some of them may appear in these pages); they will also be reading works of their predecessors going back to the coffeehouse wits of Restoration England and the flame wars of the Age of Swift. I’ll post the reading list and will be looking for ways for students to get feedback and comments (no trolls, please) from Via Meadia readers who want to help the next generation of participants in the public conversation get a start.

As to the blog itself, we’ll be introducing the new team members and rolling out the upgrades in the weeks and months ahead. Via Meadia’s success depends entirely on providing readers with useful information and analysis; our new year’s resolution is to do our level best to bring you the best blog we possibly can.
