Best Intro to Syrian Politics Yet

Want to dominate the room the next time the subject of Syria comes up?  Invest twenty minutes reading this TAI essay by Michael Doran (NYU) and Salman Shaikh (Brookings) that says it all as lucidly and clearly as anything I’ve seen.   You’ll amaze your friends and impress whatever gender strikes your fancy.

The TAI essay attributes the initiative to internal Syrian actors and discounts Iran’s support to put down rioters, Syria’s sponsorship of Hizbollah to manage Lebanon, conflict on the Turkish border, and gaming the United States for advantage. Is this reasonable?

As a general statement, I’d say it’s always better to look at internal dynamics first before assessing broader regional forces at play.

Specifically, I’m not a Middle East expert, but our editor Adam Garfinkle is, and he’s impressed with the essay. I’d go with his insights here.
