India Will Step Up in Afghanistan as US Steps Down

As the US reduces its presence in Afghanistan, that country will become an increasingly important theater in the India-Pakistan rivalry. This article by Sumit Ganguly, a well respected student of South Asian affairs, outlines some of the strategic factors that will lead India to oppose Pakistan’s plans for Afghanistan as the US draws down.

Other countries like Russia are likely to back India’s efforts to thwart Pakistan and its friends in Kabul.  They fear the spread of radical Islamism in Central Asia and loathe Pakistan’s support for terror groups as part of its asymmetric strategy in its rivalry with India.

    I know we’ve discussed this before, but what’s the alternative? Is there any reason for the US not to let Afghanistan become India, China, and Russia’s problem?
