Chuck Hagel, “Sacrificial Lamb”

In case you missed it, Dov S. Zakheim appeared on yesterday’s podcast to discuss Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s surprise resignation. Zakheim is a senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and was the Under Secretary of Defense and Chief Financial Officer for the Department of Defense from 2001–04, and in his opinion, Hagel was a kind of sacrificial lamb for an Administration looking to shake up its increasingly criticized strategies abroad:

Zakheim takes a dim view on President Obama’s foreign policy progress over his first three years:

“Wherever you look…we are beleaguered.” Well put.

Take the time to listen to the rest of Zakheim’s interview here, and then keep tuning in to hear Andrew Michta speak on Russian pressure in Scandinavia and Gal Luft’s examine the newest gas deal between Beijing and Moscow. And of course be sure to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes here to get all future episodes delivered straight to your mobile phone or mp3 player as they’re released.
