New Zealand Deports Overweight Chef

sheep

Here’s a novel approach to immigration courtesy of New Zealand: kick the fat immigrants out. A South African chef weighing 286 pounds was denied the renewal of his working visa on account of being too heavy. The irony is that New Zealand natives have ample weight problems of their own; the country has one of the highest rates of obesity of anywhere in the developed world.

TheĀ BBC reports:

An immigration spokesman said Mr Buitenhuis’s application had been rejected because his obesity put him at “significant risk” of complications including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

“It is important that all migrants have an acceptable standard of health to minimise costs and demands on New Zealand’s health services,” he said.

Yikes.

One can only speculate what would happen here if Michael Bloomberg were appointed commissioner of immigration and naturalization…

Personally, I’d be more inclined to deport a chef who was unusually skinny. It shows a certain lack of faith in their work product.

Wait! Wait! I have just the perfect Great Leader for the Kiwis: Bloomberg! Alert the media!

What the heck business is it of the NZ government to discriminate against a fat man? If the US government tried that, there’d be blood in the streets around the UN and the ACLU HQ and Human Rights Watch HQ.

A bit OT but every time I see that pic of the sheepies I just crack up. I love their expressions of “Huh? Djuew say something?”

I always wanted to go to New Zealand. I guess I will have to cross it off of my bucket list.
