Stubbed Toe? Blame Global Warming

Government scientists have just dealt an important rebuke to the professional Chicken Littles in the green movement. Last year a severe drought devastated farms across much of the lower forty-eight states. It didn’t take long for the Chicken Littles to claim the sky was falling and to blame the drought on climate change. But a new report by scientists from several different federal agencies says that the drought was a rare freak of nature, not the latest evidence of global warming’s dangerous effects. WaPo:

Scientists say the lack of moisture usually pushed up from the Gulf of Mexico was the main reason for the drought in the nation’s midsection.

“This is one of those events that comes along once every couple hundreds of years,” said lead author Martin Hoerling, a research meteorologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “Climate change was not a significant part, if any, of the event.”

At Via Meadia, we think there really is such a thing as climate change, but we also believe that there are plenty of emotionally unbalanced greens whose unrealistic climate alarmism gets in the way of thoughtful policy debate. To listen to the alarmists, floods, fires, droughts, hurricanes and blizzards are all the product of global warming. But, as this report shows, things aren’t that simple.

Unfortunately the climate alarmists are as bad at making policy as they are at reading the signals of the climate system. Until the nut cases and the Chicken Littles get sidelined by smart and responsible greens, it’s going to be hard to have the kind of debate our planet needs.

As some of use skeptics fear, just wait until Eddy Minimum take full affect in about 10 to 15 years. It will make the current alarmist look back at 1998 (the warmest year of the last 50 years, and the one that set up all of the current Global Warming panic) with nostalgia.

Global Warming doesn’t necessary kill, but Global Cooling WILL kill billions.

Do you have a link to this Eddy Minimum event, bigfire? I would be interested to hear more about it.

      • Andrew Allison

Sunspot activity. Solar flux may be more important — we’re in the midst of a series of three lower highs and two lower lows. Activity is declining, and the data suggest that we’re in for another decade-and-a-half of COOLING.

        • ojfl

I had seen those reports Andrew. Is that the Eddy Minimum?

          • Andrew Allison

Eddy Minimum is the name being promoted for the bottom of the current decline in sunspot activity.

          • ojfl

Thank you Andrew. That solves it.

One of the problems is where are these responsible greens? I do not recall any prominent ones.

  • Steve Walser

Wow Meadia, you are really going out on a limb there with your statement that “we think there really is such a thing as climate change”, NOT!!

Is there ANYBODY who doubts that, on this planet at least, climate changes over time? I don’t know of any serious observers who propound that position and I doubt you do either.
The issue is not whether climate changes ,as we already know it does, the actual issues are whether man’s activities adversely effect that variance and if they do, in what way and how severely.
Now if you want to take a stab at that question you might produce something useful to read.

Global warming is defined by rising mean temperature – asking whether or not it caused an individual event is the wrong question. The big problem is that we can’t live with fossil fuels and we can’t live without them, so the problem is just going to get worse and there’s no prospect of this changing any time soon.

    • Andrew Allison

Exactly. And the global mean has been declining since 1997

      • Icarus62

You’ve been reading too much fossil fuel industry propaganda. In reality, global warming continues unabated. That’s why the Arctic ice is in catastrophic decline, with new record minima set every year.

        • Andrew Allison

Just look at the data. Global temperature has been trending down since 1997, and that’s an incontrovertible truth.

          • Icarus62

I’ve looked at the data. The inconvenient truth is that global warming continues unabated – currently around 0.17C per decade.

          • Andrew Allison

            Data please.

GISTEMP warming rate, °C per decade:

            1973 – 2003: 0.16
            1974 – 2004: 0.18
            1975 – 2005: 0.17
            1976 – 2006: 0.18
            1977 – 2007: 0.17
            1978 – 2008: 0.17
            1979 – 2009: 0.16
            1980 – 2010: 0.16
            1981 – 2011: 0.17
            1982 – 2012: 0.17

Numerous studies find that the planetary energy imbalance is around 0.6W/m², e.g:

            Lyman et al 2010
von Schuckmann & Le Traon 2011
            Levitus et al 2012
            Nuccitelli et al 2012
            Balmaseda et al 2013

It would be remarkable if the laws of physics governing the radiative balance of the planet had suddenly changed in the last few years, and the evidence indicates that they have not. The climate is following the known physics and continuing to heat up, under the influence of our huge emissions of greenhouse gases.

          • Andrew Allison

Sorry, but the measured data show that average temperature has NOT increase since 1997. Your so-called “studies” are simply hypotheses. The FACTS are the facts.

          • Icarus62

I just gave you the data which proves you wrong.
