Sweden Neuters Its Young

Don’t let the Swedish sexism police catch you giving trucks to little boys for Christmas. Sweden’s fearless regulators are taking on toy companies for assuming that boys like cars and Nerf guns while girls prefer dolls and tea sets. The Atlantic has the story:

The Reklamombudsmannen (RO) has reprimanded Top-Toy, a licensee of Toys”R”Us and one of the largest toy companies in Northern Europe, for its “outdated” advertisements and has pressured it to mend its “narrow-minded” ways. After receiving “training and guidance” from RO equity experts, Top-Toy introduced gender neutrality in its 2012 Christmas catalogue. The catalog shows little boys playing with a Barbie Dream House and girls with guns and gory action figures.

And apparently this wasn’t enough to stop those pernicious gender stereotypes. The Swedish government is also funding a preschool dedicated to eliminating distinctions between male and female entirely. You’ve got to indoctrinate ’em while they’re young:

There are no boys and girls at Egalia—just “friends” and “buddies.” Classic fairy tales like Cinderella and Snow White have been replaced by tales of two male giraffes who parent abandoned crocodile eggs. The Swedish Green Party would like Egalia to be the norm: It has suggested placing gender watchdogs in all of the nation’s preschools. “Egalia gives [children] a fantastic opportunity to be whoever they want to be,” says one excited teacher.

This misbegotten experiment in forced androgyny is unlikely to succeed, but in a country where politicians have proposed everything from “a law to require men to sit while urinating” to a punitive “man tax,” don’t expect it to stop there.

Hearing about these fantatical feminists in Sweden has even given us slightly more sympathy for Julian Assange of all people. Swedish courts probably come down pretty hard on men who behave badly. Threaten us with time in a Swedish prison run by man-hating lunatics like these people, and we might take refuge in an Ecuadorian embassy too.

In all seriousness, there are places in the world where women are truly in danger. Privileged Western feminists might want to dedicate their energy toward resisting the real misogynists rather than prying trucks from the hands of little Swedish boys.
