Ayatollah Khamenei, master of the mullahs, Supreme Leader and Guide of a revolution that has wrecked Iran’s economy, lost its position of leadership in the Middle East and trapped the country in increasingly hostile international isolation, likes what he hears from President Obama, reports the Washington Post:
In a rare positive remark about the United States, Iran’s supreme leader lauded President Obama on Thursday for saying that he was trying to avert war with the Islamic republic.“Two days ago, we heard the president of America say: ‘We are not thinking of war with Iran.’ This is good. Very good. These are wise words. This is an exit from illusion,” said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to state television.
Alas, this approval of Obama’s rhetoric does not go very far:
But he accused the U.S. president of “still harboring illusions” that sanctions would force Iran to give up uranium enrichment.
The Supreme Guide and Leader thinks — or at least says that he thinks — that America is on the run and that its only real policy option is to accept Iran’s program for the Middle East and its nuclear weapons. If he keeps acting on that assumption, he is likely to discover what has happened to other misguided despots who underestimated the will and the determination of the US.A sensible compromise over the Iranian nuclear program is still possible, and that is what Via Meadia hopes the current standoff will ultimately produce. But if the Supreme Guide really thinks that the US believes it has no choice but to acquiesce to an Iranian agenda that includes nuclear weapons, war is on the way.
