In Libya as elsewhere, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. The Dear Loon of Libya, heir-apparent Seif al-Islam al-Qaddafi, used to pose as a modern and western looking liberal. But ever since the Libyan rebellion broke out, Seif has been following in his father’s bloody and eccentric footsteps.Last spring, he vowed to crush the rebels in ‘a river of blood’. Last week he stunned western journalists by announcing that Libya was signing an accord with radical Islamists. Now he’s gone back on that, according to the the New York Times. No agreements are planned.Evil, desperate, erratic: like father, like son. If the rabble of rebels and their equally confused NATO supporters don’t get their act together soon, Libya and the world can look forward to many years of further insanity from the Great Loon and his beloved heir. It’s not a pretty picture, and an American failure in Libya would further undermine America’s credibility in a dangerous part of the world. Let’s hope President Obama’s team finds a Libya policy soon, and that it works.
