Alim Remtulla is a Canadian writer based in Kabul, Afghanistan. Marginally conversant in Dari, he spent a month in 2010 with the Afghan National Army in Kandahar and Helmand provinces and is one of the few foreign journalists to embed with that force without NATO supervision. A shorter version of this essay appeared in the printed version of the September/October 2011 issue of The American Interest.
