Here’s a novel approach to immigration courtesy of New Zealand: kick the fat immigrants out. A South African chef weighing 286 pounds was denied the renewal of his working visa on account of being too heavy. The irony is that New Zealand natives have ample weight problems of their own; the country has one of the highest rates of obesity of anywhere in the developed world.
The BBC reports:
An immigration spokesman said Mr Buitenhuis’s application had been rejected because his obesity put him at “significant risk” of complications including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.
“It is important that all migrants have an acceptable standard of health to minimise costs and demands on New Zealand’s health services,” he said.
One can only speculate what would happen here if Michael Bloomberg were appointed commissioner of immigration and naturalization…
