Bruce E. Cain is the Charles Louis Ducommun Professor in Humanities and Sciences and the Spence and Cleone Eccles Family Director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford University. Francis Fukuyama is senior fellow and director of Stanford’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law and author, most recently, of Political Order and Political Decay. He is also chairman of the editorial board of The American Interest.
