Recent developments in Chile remind us how really violent the Communists really were. The BBC reports that the families of Chilean soldiers killed in a botched attempt to assassinate Gen. Augusto Pinochet are taking legal action against the head of the Communist party:
In an interview with the Chilean newspaper La Tercera in April, Mr Teillier said his party had approved the failed attempt against Gen Pinochet’s life and other armed operations in the 1980s [...]
The women taking legal action say they want him jailed for the deaths [of the five soldiers who died in the attack]
“We want justice and equality before the law, that’s all we want,” one of the widows told Chilean Radio Bio Bio.
Before they became inert hacks and crooked opportunists, Communists were a mix of murderous fanatics and starry eyed nincompoops. This legal action reminds us that right wingers weren’t the only Chileans with blood on their hands at that time. Fortunately communism is largely reduced to a joke these days, but we should never forget that the reds and their apologists were the greatest mass murderers in the history of mankind. Pinochet’s crimes were both appalling and real, but without the fear and loathing that communism stirred up, he, like a great any other right wing dictators, would likely have never seen power.
