Know Thyself

A former President of Ecuador diagnoses Latin America’s real ailment.

Osvaldo Hurtado served as President of Ecuador (1981–84) and President of the National Constituent Assembly (1997–98) that approved the Constitution of 1998. He currently heads CORDES, a non-profit organization that studies economic, social and political problems in Ecuador. He is the author of several books, most recently Las costumbres de los ecuatorianos (Planeta, 2007), the English version of which will be published in early 2010 under the title Portrait of a Nation: Culture and Progress in Ecuador.
